Sound is used as a noun, a verb, or an adjective.

used as a noun

A sound is a particular thing that you hear.

    He heard the sound of footsteps in the hall.

    He opened the door without a sound.

Sound is everything that can be heard.

    Sound travels better in water than in air.

used as a verb

You use sound as a verb in front of an adjective group when you are describing something that you hear.

    The stiff rustling of the woman's dress sounded alarmingly loud.

You can also use sound in front of an adjective group to describe the impression you have of someone when they speak.

    `Ah,' Piper said. He sounded a little discouraged.

You also use sound to describe the impression you have of someone or something that you have just heard about or read about.

    `They've got a small farm down in Devon.'---`That sounds nice.'

    That sounds a bit complicated.

Note that you do not use a continuous tense. You do not say, for example, `That is sounding nice'.

Note also that sound is followed by an adjective, not an adverb. You do not say `That sounds nicely'.

`sound like'

You can use the verb sound in front of `like' and a noun group in the following ways:

You can use it to say that something has a similar sound to something else.

    One of this animal's commonest calls sounds like the miaow of a cat.

    Her footsteps sounded like pistol shots.

You can use it to say that someone is talking the way someone else usually talks.

    He sounded like a small boy boasting.

    You sound just like an insurance salesman.

You can use it to say that you think you can recognize what something is, because of its sound.

    They were playing a symphony that sounded like Haydn or Mozart.

You can also use it to express an opinion about something which someone has just described to you.

    That sounds like a good idea.

    It sounded like a serious illness.

`sound' used as an adjective

When sound is used as an adjective, it has a completely different meaning. If something is sound, it is healthy or in good condition.

    My heart is basically sound.

If something such as an argument or piece of advice is sound, it is sensible and based on reason.

    Cook met every objection with sound arguments.

`sound asleep'

If someone is sound asleep, they are sleeping deeply and peacefully.

    Chris is still sound asleep in the other bed.
